Foreign Direct Investment Control in Europe: Helicopter View of an Expanding Landscape

What began in 2017 as a proposal to create the first EU-wide framework for screening foreign direct investments (FDI) received political agreement on November 2018 by the EU Coordination Framework. The European Parliament has now adopted the Framework and the Regulation will enter into force once approved by the European Council.
The key takeaway for interested parties is that although the power to block deals rests with member states, the EU has a coordination role, which can add a time layer to the overall process.
