Bellinger Quoted in Law360 on Afghanistan Refugee Assistance

August 20, 2021

Arnold & Porter partner John B. Bellinger, III, who co-heads the firm's Global Law and Public Policy practice, was quoted in a recent Law360 article titled "Lawyers Act To Help Afghans Who Fear For Their Lives." The article discusses how US attorneys, including those at Arnold & Porter, are providing legal aid for individuals seeking to leave Afghanistan who may become targets of the Taliban.

Bellinger, who joined Arnold & Porter after serving as Legal Adviser to the Department of State and Senior Associate Counsel to the President and Legal Adviser to the National Security Council (NSC) at the White House in the George W. Bush Administration, highlighted the firm's long-term work with refugee programs like the International Refugee Assistance Project. The firm has established a team to assist those who need help obtaining special immigrant visas and other documentation in order to escape from Afghanistan.

"It's personal in particular to watch Afghanistan," said Bellinger, "which the U.S. government worked incredibly hard to rebuild and strengthen the rule of law and human rights and women's rights, the judiciary, the free press, the educational system, to see all of this threatened by the Taliban."
