Skillman Talks Recent Initiatives to Strengthen U.S. Relationships in Central and South America

Legislative & Public Policy Managing Director David Skillman was recently quoted in the Fashion Dive article, “US aims to bolster textile and apparel trade partnerships in Central and South America,” which discusses how recent U.S. trade legislation has impacted textile and apparel partnerships in Central and South America.

“We’re in a period where we’re recasting our relationships in the region to focus on critical supply chains, and to address the other challenges the U.S. and the region face in terms of economic investments and growth in regional economies, the migration of peoples, and the related humanitarian issues,” Skillman told Fashion Dive.

Skillman also discussed the Americas Act — proposed legislation to expand current U.S. trade deals with Latin American countries, incentivize businesses to near-shore operations to Latin America, and counter China’s geopolitical and economic influence in the region — saying, “We have a hodgepodge of existing trading relationships from different areas and different requirements and it’s kind of a jumble. The Americas Act provides a framework to organize and relate all of these efforts to one another.”
