Threats From AI Regulators Are “Tangible,” Alexander Roussanov Tells Compliance Week
Life Sciences Regulatory and Privacy partner Alexander Roussanov was recently quoted in the Compliance Week article, “AI misuse could lead to sanctions from multiple regulators, experts warn.”
Roussanov emphasized that since the legal framework surrounding AI is still in its early stages and lacks harmonization and alignment with other applicable EU legislations, threats from enforcement by multiple regulators are “tangible.” He warned that the enforcement mechanisms for these regulations could operate simultaneously, leading to concurrent enforcement actions.
Lawmakers have tried to prevent the EU AI Act from being overly punitive, but Roussanov noted that various enforcers, from national to EU levels, will need to reach a consensus on regulatory guidance and effective enforcement guidelines and potentially revise existing regulations. “The experience at EU level to date suggests this would be rather challenging to achieve in practice,” he added.
