Sarah Grey Weighs in on States’ Climate Disclosure Proposals in Bloomberg Law
Environmental partner Sarah Grey was quoted in the Bloomberg Law article, “States Advance Climate Disclosure Proposals as SEC Steps Back.” The story discusses legislation in Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, and New York that would require businesses with over $1 billion in revenue to disclose their greenhouse gas emissions.
While the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is poised to pull back federal requirements to include climate-related information in SEC filings, several state legislatures have introduced proposals to fill the gap.
Grey cautioned that state regulations must be carefully worded to specify whether companies’ subsidiaries are covered. Legislating corporate climate disclosure “isn’t something that states have traditionally been involved in doing,” she said.
