The National Law Journal 2024 Recognizes Arnold & Porter’s Government Relations and Appellate Groups as Finalists, Honors Jeff Smith with 'Lifetime Achievement' Award

August 27, 2024

The National Law Journal Legal Awards 2024 will honor Arnold & Porter senior counsel Jeffrey Smith with the “Lifetime Achievement” Award at their annual event. The NLJ also named the firm’s Legislative and Public Policy Group a finalist for the “Government Relations/Lobbying” award and the Appellate & Supreme Court practice a finalist for the “Appellate Hot List” category.

Smith will receive the “Lifetime Achievement” award, which honors an attorney’s career-long accomplishments and impact on the national legal community. He will be recognized for his 50+ year career in which he has played a leading role in the development of national security law and served in the Pentagon, Department of State, as General Counsel of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and General Counsel of the CIA. At Arnold & Porter, Smith created and led one of, if not the first, national security practice groups. Throughout his career, he has advised major corporations, foreign governments, universities, and media organizations on national security issues and his individual clients include former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and Madeliene Albright.

The publication shortlisted the firm’s Legislative and Public Policy Group — led by the chair of the practice, Eugenia Pierson — for its “Government Relations/Lobbying” award. The group operates at the nexus of public policy and law, offering strategic counsel and direct governmental affairs services across a spectrum of critical issues that has helped them achieve numerous significant victories.

The NLJ also shortlisted the firm’s Appellate & Supreme Court practice for the “Appellate Hot List” category. Since January 2023, the Appellate & Supreme Court practice had no less than six significant cases decided by the U.S. Supreme Court and prevailed in all of them. They have also successfully convinced the Court to review two additional cases that it will hear next term.

The winners will be announced at the ceremony on October 24 at the Fairmont in Washington, D.C.
