Arnold & Porter’s Pro Bono Asylum Work Honored by the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies
Arnold & Porter’s pro bono asylum work was recently honored at the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies (CGRS)’s event, “The State of Play of Asylum Law.” The event included a panel discussion on the stakes for asylum law in the upcoming U.S. presidential election and recognized lawyers and firms for their efforts championing pro bono asylum and impact litigation cases.
The firm’s ongoing efforts to protect the rights of individuals and organizations impacted by the U.S. government’s Migrant Protection Protocols (“MPP”) received CGRS’s “Pro Bono Asylum Excellence Impact Litigation” award. Along with co-counsel CGRS, Innovation Law Lab, Southern Poverty Law Center, and the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild, the firm is representing a class of asylum seekers who were required to return to Mexico to await their immigration proceedings under MPP. Associate Hannah Coleman accepted the award on behalf of the Arnold & Porter team, which includes Matthew Heartney, Daniel Shimell, Ally Myers, and Katie Weng.
