Arnold & Porter Named to Bloomberg Law's 2024 "Pro Bono Innovators" List
Arnold & Porter was recently named to Bloomberg Law's 2024 "Pro Bono Innovators" list, which honors a selection of law firms and other legal service providers that "go above and beyond in delivering pro bono legal services." The firm was selected among 10 honoree law firms for the third edition of the publication's report.
Bloomberg Law recognized the firm for its success in obtaining compensation from the U.S. government for migrant families separated by the United States government at the southern border. In collaboration with immigration and civil rights organizations, over 230 Arnold & Porter lawyers and staff contributed more than 27,000 hours litigating a groundbreaking lawsuit.
"Our attorneys designed a novel strategy and legal argument for separated families to seek damages by showing that government officials committed intentional infliction of emotional distress and, therefore, were liable under the [Federal Tort Claims Act]," Chief Pro Bono Counsel Lucy McMillan and partner Diana Reiter told Bloomberg Law.
The publication also featured the firm for securing a groundbreaking 2023 U.S. Supreme Court victory in Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County v. Talevski, upholding the right of 87 million Medicaid recipients to seek redress when denied proper care. Counsel Andrew Tutt, who led the Arnold & Porter team, told Bloomberg Law that the firm's approach to the case was rooted in a deep understanding of the legal and human stakes involved.
"We did not merely win but emphatically won (by a vote of 7-2), a Supreme Court case many believed could not be won and reaffirmed a key protection for millions of the most vulnerable population. Hard evidence of the value we delivered to the case can be found in the wide margin of victory and the exceptional sweeping consequences of the decision for millions of stakeholders," Tutt said.
Arnold & Porter's pro bono work has been widely recognized by the legal community. The firm was recently highlighted as one of the top 5 firms for pro bono in Law360's 2024 "Social Impact Leaders" report, which recognizes firms who are "setting the bar for social impact" based on five pillars: racial and ethnic diversity, gender equality, employee engagement, pro bono service, and responsible business. Earlier this year, Arnold & Porter's pro bono work was highlighted in The American Lawyer's 2024 "Pro Bono Scorecard," in which the firm was named a top 10 firm for its national and international pro bono work.
