The Far Reach of FARA
Over the last several years, the Justice Department has devoted ever more time and resources to enforcing the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), a broad and complex law that requires disclosure and transparency about foreign efforts to influence U.S. policy and public opinion.
But FARA’s scope and reach may be broader than you realize, potentially covering everything from traditional lobbying to corporate publicity campaigns to promoting U.S. investment and tourism in foreign countries. And the Department of Justice is soon expected to announce revised regulations that could narrow some of FARA’s key exemptions from registration.
