The Economist Speaks With Deborah Curtis, Former DOJ Deputy Chief for Export Control & Sanctions and Commerce Department BIS Chief Counsel: Corporate Patriotism vs. Corporate Purpose

White Collar Defense & Investigations partner Deborah Curtis was recently quoted in The Economist article, “Patriotism is replacing purpose in American business,” which observes that amid Democrats and Republicans’ eagerness to stay ahead of China in technological advancements, the focus on corporate purpose has diminished while calls for corporate patriotism have grown louder.

Some companies are attempting to persuade politicians to ease trade and investment regulations. Curtis told The Economist that recent talks between executives and policymakers regarding technology restrictions illustrate that “companies are pushing a lot harder than they were even a year ago.”
