Douglas Recognized in Law Week Colorado’s 2023 “Top Litigators”
Arnold & Porter partner Matt Douglas was named to Law Week Colorado's 2023 "Top Litigators" list, which recognizes "the leading trial attorneys in the state who had the biggest wins (and saves) in the courtroom during 2022." Law Week Colorado highlighted Douglas's "robust practice" where he specializes in product liability and environmental litigation, as well as his pro bono work.
Douglas told Law Week Colorado that his "most rewarding cases" have been in the pro bono space. He specifically pointed to his work as one of the lead trial lawyers representing seven protesters who sued the City of Denver after being injured by officers who used excessive force against them while they were peacefully protesting in the summer of 2020 in the wake of George Floyd's murder, telling Law Week Colorado that it was "the most gratifying work he's ever done."
At the end of a three-week trial in federal court, the jury held the city responsible for a variety of First and Fourth Amendment violations committed by officers against the protesters and awarded a total of $14 million to the 12 plaintiffs who went to trial.
"Having the opportunity to get pro bono cases like that makes the practice of law better, more interesting and more rewarding," Douglas said. "To be able to have my regular practice and have an opportunity to do pro bono cases like this is really kind of special."
In 2022, Arnold & Porter, including Douglas, was recognized by the ACLU Colorado for their successful representation of the seven protestors against the City of Denver. Douglas also was named to The American Lawyer’s 2022 West Trailblazers for his work on this matter.
