Arnold & Porter Named a Top-5 Firm on The American Lawyer's 2023 'Pro Bono Scorecard'

Arnold & Porter was named a top-5 firm on The American Lawyer’s 2023 “Pro Bono Scorecard” for its national pro bono work and a top-10 firm for its international pro bono work.

“Pro bono work is a core value at Arnold & Porter, and is one of the reasons why attorneys make the firm their home. It is the firm’s privilege and responsibility to continue our commitment to representing those who cannot otherwise afford counsel and to advocate zealously for the rule of law,” said Dan Cantor, partner, and chair of Arnold & Porter’s Pro Bono Committee.

In 2022, firm attorneys provided more than 130,000 hours of pro bono service. Arnold & Porter lawyers handle a diverse array of pro bono matters, including civil rights litigation, criminal justice reform, immigration, housing, poverty law, reducing gun violence, and transactional, regulatory, and public policy matters.

The American Lawyer specifically highlighted, as one of the “15 matters that represent the very best of the legal industry’s pro bono efforts in 2022,” Arnold & Porter’s successful representation of seven peaceful protestors who sued the City of Denver after officers used excessive force during demonstrations in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. Other significant 2022 pro bono achievements include a pair of U.S. Supreme Court victories for former Army reservist Le Roy Torres in a military discrimination case and for Mr. William Dale Wooden, a federal prisoner who was sentenced to 15 years in prison under a misinterpretation of the Armed Career Criminal Act for illegally possessing a firearm as a felon.

The "Pro Bono Scorecard" annually ranks Am Law 200 firms based on pro bono hours performed by their attorneys, along with the percentage of attorneys who performed more than 20 hours of pro bono work. Firms are scored separately for work performed by U.S. attorneys and by attorneys outside the U.S. Calculations are based on lawyer counts as of Dec. 31, 2022.

Arnold & Porter’s pro bono work has been widely recognized by the legal community. The firm was included in Bloomberg Law’s inaugural “Pro Bono Innovators” list and a was named a top-10 firm in Law360’s 2022 Social Impact Leaders list. The firm also was named a “Pro Bono Leader” by the DC Circuit Pro Bono Standing Committee, the American Immigration Council honored Arnold & Porter with its American Heritage Award for the firm’s pro bono work advancing immigration rights, and the firm was recognized by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area for its pro bono asylum work.
