Arnold & Porter’s Environmental Practice Grows with Additions of Former DOJ Trial Attorney Jeffrey Talbert and Counsel Ben Piper
NEWARK, N.J., and BOSTON, March 25, 2024 — Arnold & Porter is pleased to announce the continuing growth of its Environmental practice with the arrival of Jeffrey Talbert and Ben Piper. Talbert, a former trial attorney at the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), joins the firm’s Environmental practice as a partner and Piper joins the firm’s Environmental practice as counsel.
Brian Israel, chair of the firm’s Environmental practice group and co-lead of the firm’s Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) working group, said, “Jeff is a highly regarded trial attorney and environmental lawyer, with a deep understanding of complex environmental issues and an extensive background in handling matters related to contaminated sediment sites across the country. Similarly, Ben has a strong background in environmental cleanup litigation. Their additions will build upon our Environmental practice’s reputation as leaders in the field, particularly in the areas of complex contaminated sites, natural resource damages, and toxic tort litigation.”
Jeffrey Talbert joins the Newark and Boston offices as a partner in the Environmental practice. A Fellow in the American College of Environmental Lawyers, Talbert is a nationally recognized trial attorney and environmental lawyer who advises clients on environmental litigation, permitting, due diligence, risk management, and the allocation and mediation of liability among parties at Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act or Resource Conservation and Recovery Act sites. Earlier in his career, Talbert served as a trial attorney in the Environmental Enforcement Section of the DOJ’s Environment & Natural Resources Division. In that capacity, Talbert led trial teams across the country in a wide range of environmental cases, including in one of the largest Clean Water Act cases ever brought by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency and DOJ. Talbert earned his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and his B.A. from Kalamazoo College.
Ben Piper joins the Environmental practice as counsel and will be affiliated with the Boston office. With a particular focus on the representation of businesses in environmental cleanup litigation, Piper represents clients ranging from individuals to large public and private companies. He handles a wide variety of complex litigation matters, which include commercial disputes, environmental and professional liability litigation, and intellectual property claims. Piper earned his J.D. from University of Wisconsin Law School, cum laude, and his B.A. from Georgetown University, cum laude.
In joining the firm, Talbert said, “Arnold & Porter handles some of the most high-profile and complex environmental matters facing clients today. I am excited to join my new colleagues and help expand the firm’s Environmental practice in New Jersey.”
The arrival of Talbert and Piper follows the recent addition of Stacey Sublett Halliday, former Special Counsel in the Office of General Counsel at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, who joined the firm’s Environmental practice in Washington, D.C.
